Cycling in Fort Worth's Summer Heat
When temperatures soar past 100°F in Fort Worth, cycling requires careful planning. Here's how to stay safe and keep riding all summer long.
Hydration Strategy
Drink before you're thirsty. Carry two bottles minimum — one with water, one with electrolytes. For rides over an hour, consider a hydration pack. Fort Worth's humidity makes sweating less effective, so electrolyte replacement is critical.
Timing Your Rides
The golden rule: ride early or late. Before 8 AM is ideal in summer. The Trinity Trails have shaded sections that help, but direct sun exposure is still a risk. Evening rides after 7 PM are also good, with many trail sections well-lit.
What to Wear
Light-colored, moisture-wicking clothing is essential. A good helmet with ventilation, UV-protective arm sleeves, and sunglasses will make a huge difference. Don't forget sunscreen on exposed skin.
